Quebec Parental Insurance Plan

Both employers and employees must contribute to the Québec parental insurance plan (QPIP).

Both employers and employees must contribute to the Québec parental insurance plan (QPIP) in order to provide for the payment of benefits to employees who take unpaid maternity, paternity, adoption or parental leave. Both employee and employer contributions are paid directly to Revenu Quebec.

Implemented on January 1, 2006, the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) provides financial benefits to all eligible workers, including both salaried and self-employed individuals, who are taking maternity leave, paternity leave (for the non-birthing parent), parental leave, or adoption leave.

This plan replaces the maternity, parental, and adoption benefits that were previously offered under the federal employment insurance program.

As an income replacement initiative, eligibility for the QPIP requires that applicants have earned work income prior to their leave.
